An Unexpected Visitor
Sep. 14th, 2011 02:53 pmGabriel has been trying to work for hours. He has a Longines that he'd said he would have back to its owner a week ago, but when he tries to work on it, his hands tremble.
A few feet away from where he's sitting, he killed a man. He put the body in a dumpster a few blocks down. The guy's family is probably out there somewhere wondering if he was still alive. Gabriel keeps expecting the police to show up. If they would just show up, he would tell them everything that happened.
Every time he hears a siren--which is often enough in Queens--he closes his eyes and waits for them to come to his door. Every time, the siren fades away, leaving him alone in his shop, trembling.
He takes a deep breath and holds his hands out in front of him until he can force them to be still. Finally, he once again tries to get to work.
